August 28, 2016momstownRecessNo comments
Looking for some children’s books that can help kids get comfortable with the idea of heading off to school? Try these 5 great books about back to school!

Some momstown mamas have kids going to their very first preschool, and some are veterans with kids in the big ‘grades’… but everyone has some anxiety and excitement about going back to school!

Here are 5 great ‘back to school’ reads to share with your child – they’re a nice starting point for a conversation about first-day worries!

first day

First Day by Joan Rankin – Great for Preschoolers It’s the first day of school at Yappy Puppy playschool and Haybillybun is not sure he wants to go. He ends up having a great time, and his jitters go away… but his mom misses him more than she thought!

tom goes to kindergartenTom Goes to Kindergarten by Margaret Wild – for First-time Kindies

Tom the panda bear can’t wait to start kindergarten! But once he’s there, he wishes his family could stay, so they do (for a bit)! By the end of the day, everyone loves kindergarten and Tom has found some newfound independence.

wemberley worriedWemberley Worried by Kevin Henkes – for any age

My kids love Kevin Henkes’ Owen and Julius, and Wemberly is another endearing character! Wemberly mouse worries about everything… big things, little things… and especially about school starting! A great book for kids to help them think about why they worry, and what they can do to feel less worried!

the kissing hand

The Kissing Hand – by Audrey Penn – great for first-timers! Chester the raccoon is anxious about going to kindergarten for the first time. His mother comes up with a wonderful way to tell him she loves him and that she is always with him. A very sweet story that may start a new kissing hand tradition with you and your kids!

first day jitters

First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg – great for grades 1-3. The story follows Sarah waking up on the first day of school – and she doesn’t want to go! She’s worried that she doesn’t know anyone and nobody will like her. The principal escorts her to the classroom, where on the final page we learn that Sarah is the new teacher! (the illustrations have cleverly hidden her body until the last page) This great twist will delight children and help them to share another perspective of the first day of school.

Enjoy these great books as you prepare for the first day of school!
